This week for reading the students will be studying the concept fact and opinion.  They will be given a list of vocabulary words for the week.  They will do a word web, make sentences,  create a cross word puzzle and write a story and poem using the words.  List of words:  IGNITED, SQUINTING, JETTISONED, TRANQUILITY, CRAMPED, POTENTIALLY, FOYER, REPLICA, URBAN, PLAZA, ANCHOR, ALMANAC, PETITE, METEOROLOGY, AND PHYSICS.

Math:  We will continue to study fractions.  The students will multiply fractions and whole numbers, fractions and mixed numbers and mixed number time mixed numbers.

Science:  Foss kit:  Out door activity Shadow Tracking.

Social Science:  Students will be studying the states of the United States. 

The students will be bringing home a field trip slip for a trip to Lincoln Park Zoo on May 14.  Please sign and return by May 11.

This week the students will take a interm test in reading and math.  Reading will be given on Tuesday and math on Thursday.

Reading:  The students will review some of the vocabulary words from past stories.  The students will write a poem,  story and cross word puzzle.

Math:  The students will continue to practice adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  Some of the students are strugging with this concepts.  Please take the time and go over the homework with them.

WRITING: THE STUDENTS ARE WRITING A PERSUASIVE ESSAY.  PLEASE READ AND CHECK OVER IT WITH THE STUDENT.

SOCIAL STUDIES :  THE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING THE STATES AND THEIR CAPITOLS.

SCIENCE:  THE STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO STUDY FROM THE FOSS KIT.

FRIDAY IS PICTURE DAY.  WE WILL BE GOING ON A FIELD TRIP, PLEASE MAKE YOUR CHILD A LUNCH.

Wow!  It’s the fourth quarter.  Can you believe it?  It has been a pleasure working with your child this year.  This quarter we will review some of the concepts and prepare your child for the next grade level.

READING:  This week we will be working on the skill focus Summarizing and Paraphrasing.  We will use graphic organizers, small group discussion and partner reading.  The students will be given a list of vocabulary words on Monday.  They will write a story, poem, sentences and a make a cross word puzzle of the words. At the end of the week they will be given a test on the words.  The list of words are:  ASSET, INTENTLY, PROFUSELY, ORDEAL, TERRAIN, DISMAL, PERIL, ESTEEM, IMPASSIBLE, ENCOURAGEMENT, REASSURANCE, DISASTER, CYCLONE, OPTIC, AND POLYGRAPH. Please study these words with your child each night.

MATH:  This week focus will be fractions. We will review adding  and subtracting like and unlike fractions.  Next we will multiply fractions.

SCIENCE: The students will be introduced to Solar Energy, using the Foss Kit.

WRITING:  The students will finish up their expository writing .

This week for math the class will be focusing on fractions.   The students will learn how to add and subtract fraction with like an unlike denominators.  For science  the students will be working from the Foss kit to build a simple machine.

This is the second week of ISAT testing.  This week the 5th graders will be taking the writing test  and the 4th graders the science test.

Wow!  How time goes by.  It’s time for the ISAT Test.  Starting Wednesday 3-3-10 your child will be taking the first session of reading and math. Make sure they get a good night sleep.
